I’m having students in my courses use Substack (rather than Wordpress) this fall. Wordpress has turned into a smelly mess. Figured I’d establish the blog for my book Making Maps (co-authored with Denis Wood). The 3rd edition came out in 2016. I’ve included the cover and start of the book below. It works better as a book than on a computer.
My co-author, Denis Wood, and I spent the better part of a week in Raleigh talking through revisions for the 4th edition and I think we have a good plan. The revisions will require a huge amount of work, given that I’ve designed the entire 293 book myself and produced it using Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Fewer words, more graphics = more work. But that’s fine. I actually really enjoy the task of designing and producing a book every 5 years or so.
Maybe I’ll write more about the Making Maps book, and maybe more about other stuff (including how my students do with Substack)
Thanks for caring how maps can tell a story and have a perspective, a point of view, in many senses. My favorite line that popped up while browsing google maps is “You can’t get there from here.” I guess that’s all the context they feel we deserve, along with being sure we know where the nearest Starbucks and Whole Foods are located. I hope you enchant generations of students.
